Press release on the results of the second round of Russian-Japanese two-plus-two format consultations (20.03.2017)
On March 20, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov participated in the second round of the Russian-Japanese consultations of foreign and defence ministers in the two-plus-two format in Tokyo. This dialogue format was resumed in accordance with the leaders’ agreement following President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Japan on December 15-16, 2016. The previous round was held in November 2013.
The officials exchanged views on key issues of global and regional security and possible measures to improve confidence between Russia and Japan in the military and political sphere. The Russian side outlined its principled approaches to building new security architecture in the Asia-Pacific region, based on non-aligned approaches and respect for the interests of all parties. In this context, the Russian side expressed concern over the deployment of elements of the US global missile defence system in the Asia-Pacific region.
They also addressed other issues, including the situation on the Korean peninsula and the South China Sea. Both sides expressed readiness to step up coordinated efforts to combat international terrorism and drug trafficking.
The next round of talks in this format is scheduled to be held in Russia. The terms will be coordinated through diplomatic channels.
